On 4th August 1914 Britiain entered the First World War, one of the costliest conflicts in history, with fighting continuing until 11th November 1918, Armistice Day. Sproughton contributed to the war effort and many residents went to the front line. Twenty Sproughton men, many in their early twenties paid the ultimate price and lost their lives in the fight for freedom. We pay tribute to these men and all who were part of the hostilities. SPROUGHTON PAGES FROM THE BENEFICE BOOK OF THE FALLEN
These are the Sproughton pages (© JMKJones) in the Tribute Book to the 93 World War I Fallen of the North Samford Benefice; a copy of which was given to each of the six Parish Churches in 2003.
Almost all these graves and memorials shown below were visited by Jennifer and Peter Jones of Copdock and Washbrook and photographed by Jennifer between 2001 and 2003. The photographs of those whose graves/memorials that could not be visited or had slipped through the net of the early CWGC website have been donated by The War Graves Photographic Project (www.twgpp.org) - for whom Jennifer became a volunteer.
At home further background research was done by Jean Austen (formerly of Belstead) - those details can be seen on the Roll of Honour website: http://www.roll-of-honour.com. The aim of the original project was to “bring these men back home after all these years” - it has been an honour and a privilege so to do.
